Internship Opportunities

Learn the workings of the creative and business sides of Independent Curators International. You can intern with our exhibitions department to learn all about organizing and traveling exhibitions. If you want fundraising experience, you can intern with our development department and learn about membership, special event management and grant researching and writing. Or if you’re interested in education, you can intern with public programs to learn about how to organize public events and reach new audiences.

Deadlines:

For Spring (January-May): November 30
For Fall (September-December): July 31
For Summer (June-August): April 15

All internships are unpaid, but may be taken for academic credit. Please see the descriptions below for information about how to apply for development, exhibitions and public programs internships at ICI.

DEVELOPMENT INTERNSHIP

Responsibilities:
Work with the development staff on multiple aspects of ICI’s fundraising efforts; General- assist with special events and membership program (attending events on occasion), assist in researching new foundation and corporate funding opportunities and help with preparation of grant applications and corporate proposals, general office duties (assist with mailings, faxes, database entry) as needed; Specific tasks for 2010- research and help plan a trip to Brazil for ICI supporters, research and help plan ICI’s 2010 Fall Benefit, research and develop ICI’s international networks.

Recommended Skills and Experience:
Applicants should be graduate students or undergraduates who have completed at least 2 years of college. Strong interest in pursuing a career in areas of fundraising/development or arts administration necessary. Interest in contemporary art a plus. Strong writing and communication skills; solid research experience; familiarity with using database software a plus; well organized with attention to detail; ability to work with limited supervision

Schedule:
Minimum of one full day a week. Part time, flexible. Schedule can be adjusted for the right candidate.

EXHIBITIONS INTERNSHIP

The Curatorial Intern will provide assistance to the Exhibitions Department in all phases of development of traveling exhibitions.

Responsibilities:
Assist with the maintenance of files and records related to exhibitions; assist in preparation, assembly, and execution of checklists, loan forms, installation instructions, and other exhibition related projects; research potential venues for exhibitions; research basic information about artists; assist with the production of publications; general administrative assistance

Requirements:
Excellent organizational and communication skills (both verbal and written); ability to work both independently and under structured supervision; strong interest in contemporary art; experience with Mac computers, Excel, and Photoshop.

Schedule:
Availability for at least 2 full days per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday). Intern hours are 10:00am – 5:30pm.

COMMUNICATIONS & OPERATIONS INTERNSHIP

Responsibilities:
Work with the Communications and Office departments on the planning, execution and follow up of ICI’s Communications projects, our Publications roster and our general daily operations. This is a multifaceted internship which will give the candidate a great general overview of the operations of a non-profit arts organization while exposing them to specific areas of Communications (press archiving, liaising with exhibition venues to collate and generate press, maintaining databases), Publications (preparing for ICI’s participation in the NY Art Book Fair this fall) and Operations (researching special projects at ICI).  Tasks may also include researching and compiling contacts databases; implementing new strategies to promote our programming and the ICI brand; assist in researching venues and speakers for events; general office duties as needed

Well organized with attention to detail; strong writing and research experience; ability to work both independently and under structured supervision; strong interest in contemporary art

EDUCATION INTERNSHIP

Responsibilities:
Work with public programs on the planning, execution and follow up of ICI’s itinerant public program series, The Curator’s Perspective; work on the organization of the fall 2010 Curatorial Intensive training program and research for 2011 educational programs; implement new strategies to promote, organize, and document programming; assist in researching venues and speakers for events; general office duties as needed.

Recommended Skills and Experience:
Well organized with attention to detail; strong writing and research experience; ability to work both independently and under structured supervision; strong interest in curatorial studies and contemporary art required; interest and knowledge in issues of public practice and audience engagement helpful; excellent experience for a senior undergraduate/first year MA student.

Schedule:

SPECIAL PROGRAMS INTERNSHIP

Work with ICI’s Special Programs department on the planning, execution and follow up of the New York Studio Event Series; Artist Limited Editions; The Curator’s Network; The Curator’s Lounge; and Independent Visions. Work directly with the Special Programs Manager to craft and prepare 2012 program structures while executing and managing 2011 projects and events. Implement new strategies to promote, organize, and document ICI’s member programming and special events. This internship will offer insight into every aspect of operating a non-profit arts organization.

Recommended Skills and Experience:

All candidates should have a professional demeanor and an up-beat attitude. Strong administrative skills and the ability to complete work in a timely and efficient manner are essential. Applicants should have a strong interest in contemporary art, the art market, and arts administration. The person who assumes this position should have a strong interest and commitment to the contemporary art, be tech savvy, and possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written. In addition this person must possess the ability to work both independently and under structured supervision. Experience with the following programs is a must: Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office, Filemaker Pro, CMS website management software.
