A training intensive for aspiring curators
Building on its history as a hub for curatorial ideas, ICI is supporting curators to develop exhibition proposals and create new professional networks.
This October in New York ICI is organizing The Curatorial Intensive for emerging curators internationally who want to learn about curating in the public realm. From an open competition, 10-14 individuals will be selected to study with some of today’s leading practitioners working within the rapidly growing field known as public practice.
Teachers and advisors for this program include Nicholas Baume (Director and Chief Curator, Public Art Fund); Claire Bishop (Associate Professor, Ph.D. Program in Art History, CUNY); Dan Cameron (Founding Director, Prospect New Orleans); Jim Campbell (artist); Kate Fowle (Executive Director, ICI); Mary Jane Jacob (Professor and Executive Director of Exhibitions, SAIC); Richard Marshall (Curator, Lever House); Anne Pasternak (President and Artistic Director, Creative Time); and Nato Thompson (Chief Curator, Creative Time).
Participating in a rigorous schedule of workshops, discussions, critiques, and individual advisement sessions, as well as visits to local institutions and conversations with artists, participants will be trained to develop their ideas into full proposals. Topics discussed will include logistical issues such as commissioning, producing, and installing projects in public space, as well as concepts ranging from site-specificity to social and political engagement.
After the New York phase of the project is complete, ICI will continue working with participants long-distance to finalize their proposals for publication on ICI’s website, so broad publics, as well as the hundreds of institutions with which ICI works, can view the final proposals.
