Visitors are the stars in this interactive exhibition, where they collaborate with artists in the creation of artworks by following (or more often, by choosing not to follow) the artists’ printed instructions and images. The twenty-nine artworks, printed on heavy paper stock and stacked in individual piles in the gallery, include projects by Luca Buvoli, E.V. Day, Glenn Ligon, Eve Sussman, and Chris Ware. The visitor selects a project, cuts out the components, and assembles them into a three-dimensional sculpture. The Paper Sculpture Show harks back to venerable art-historical precedents such as Fluxus, mail art, the Surrealists’ “Exquisite Corpse” games of collaborative drawing, and optical-illusion experiments of the nineteenth century.

The exhibition is co-curated by Mary Ceruti, director of SculptureCenter, New York; Matt Freedman, artist, curator and writer; and Sina Najafi, editor-in-chief of Cabinet magazine; it is accompanied by The Paper Sculpture Book.
