Director of Development

Overview:
Work with executive director, Board of Trustees and development staff to raise approximately $800,000 to $1million annually in contributed income from individuals, foundations, corporations and the NEA.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop a detailed annual fund-raising strategy with financial goals, timelines, and actions to be taken.
  • Develop and monitor the contributed income categories on the iCI annual budget, as well as budgets for specific development activities.
  • Cultivate and expand individual giving through iCI’s multi-level membership program, special events and other activities. Plan and oversee program activities for members, as well as special events including gala benefit dinners and auctions.
  • Devise a strategy for sustaining current institutional supporters and securing new sources of foundation grants and corporate sponsorships for iCI programs, operations and endowment purposes.
  • Attend all Board meetings and work with trustees on various board committees including Resource Development, Public Relations and Marketing, and Finance.

Requirements:

  • B.A. in Arts Management, Fine Arts, Art History, or related arts field; M.A. desirable
  • Five to ten years broad development experience, preferably in the arts
  • Strong interest in/knowledge of contemporary art
  • Experience working with a Board and supervising staff. 
  • Creative, well-organized, self-motivated individual
  • Strong computer, communication and writing skills

IT and Office Manager

Overview:
Oversee and coordinate administrative and IT support for a 10-person non-profit organization dedicated to contemporary art.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide IT support and administrative direction for daily operational activities of the organization, including configuring email and other desktop applications, system backup, and ftp site.
  • Identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support cost-effective technology solutions for all aspects of the organization and implement IT policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Coordinate with iCI staff to monitor and maintain database policies and procedures to ensure integrity and availability.
  • Negotiate lease and purchase office equipment including computer system.  Responsible for upgrades and keeping equipment in good function.
  • Assist bookkeeper and handle requests for related information. 
  • Prepare and monitor annual budget for office operations.
  • Coordinate staff benefits including health and life insurance with vendors.
  • Oversee consultants, contractors working on iCI equipment including IT external services, and office cleaning crew.
  • Supervise part-time office assistant.
  • Supervise the ordering and inventory of office supplies.
  • Supervise the maintenance of off-site document storage.
  • Supervise publication sales to venues and general public.
  • Track publication sales from distributor and prepare reports of iCI’s publication sales.  Manage publication inventory.

Requirements:

  • Two years office experience with managerial responsibilities.
  • Knowledge of Apple Server environment, Retrospect, Rumpus, Filemaker, Quickbooks, and Microsoft Office applications.  Knowledge of HTML a plus.
  • Interest in contemporary art preferred.

Exhibitions Internship

Overview:
Independent Curators International (iCI) is a dynamic non-profit organization committed to enhancing the understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through its innovative traveling exhibitions and publications.  iCI brings challenging artworks to a wide range of museums, giving diverse audiences in the United States and abroad the opportunity to experience new art.

The Curatorial Intern will provide assistance to the Exhibitions Department in all phases of development of traveling exhibitions.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the maintenance of files and records related to exhibitions.
  • Assist in preparation, assembly, and execution of checklists, target mailings, loan forms, press packets, and other exhibition related projects.
  • Research potential venues for exhibitions
  • Research basic information about artists
  • Assist with the collection and maintenance of visual materials (slides / photographs / digital files).
  • General administrative assistance.

Requirements:

  • Office experience required, previous museum or gallery experience preferred.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience with Macintosh, Excel, and Photoshop.
  • Ability to work with limited supervision.
  • Interest in contemporary art.
  • Availability for at least 1 full day per week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday). Intern hours are 10:00am – 5:30pm.

Development Internship
Summer 2008

Independent Curators International (iCI), a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the understanding and appreciation of contemporary art through traveling exhibitions that reach a diverse national and international audience seeks an individual to assist the Development department in various aspects of iCI’s fundraising efforts.

Responsibilities:
Work with the development staff on multiple aspects of iCI’s fundraising efforts.

  • Assist with special events and membership program (attend events on occasion)
  • Assist in researching new foundation and corporate funding opportunities and help with preparation of grant applications and corporate proposals
  • Help track donor giving and acknowledgements
  • General office duties (assist with mailings, faxes, database entry) as needed

Mid-way through the internship, you will work with the staff to develop a project of special interest to complete during the internship. Special interest areas could include: Membership marketing research/outreach, grants and fundraising opportunities research/outreach, or a cataloging/archiving project. The project will be established based on your interests and strengths.

Recommended Skills and Experience:
Applicants should be graduate students or undergraduates who have completed at least 2 years of college. Strong interest in pursuing a career in areas of fundraising/development or arts administration necessary. Interest in contemporary art a plus.

  • Familiarity with using database software a plus
  • Well organized with attention to detail
  • Ability to work with limited supervision

Although this is an un-paid internship, interns may arrange with his/her college to receive credit.  Preference given to candidates who can commit to at least two days per week.
